The Return of the SCC Rapid Grand Prix 2022-2023

Mark your calendars for the return of the SCC Rapid Grand Prix! This season’s upcoming dates are as follows:

  • Sunday, September 18, 2022
  • Sunday, November 6, 2022
  • Sunday, January 8, 2023
  • Sunday, March 19, 2023 -- DATE CHANGE
  • Sunday, May 7, 2023
  • Sunday, June 4, 2023 – Rapid Grand Prix Superfinal

Location Place Riel, lower level, University of Saskatchewan. Registration is from 9-9:45am with Round 1 beginning at 10am sharp.  Please arrive no later than 9:45am to hear pre-tournament announcements.

Time control is 25 minutes per game + 10 second increment beginning on move one. 

Entry fee is $30 per tournament with a prize fund divided among the total entrance fees for each tournament awarded:

  • 50% for 1st Place
  • 30% for 2nd Place
  • 20% for 3rd Place

The fine print: An up-to-date Canadian Chess Federation membership is required as all tournaments are CFC rated (quick rating). Each tournament is a five-round, Swiss System format with no tie-breaks. Each participant is guaranteed at least four games per tournament; all byes are awarded a half-point. Grand Prix points are cumulative. 

NEW THIS SEASON: The SCC Rapid Grand Prix Superfinal

This special championship final tournament will be a six-player, Closed event by invitation and will be played Sunday, June 4th, 2023. This event will have a guaranteed minimum prize fund:

  • $200 awarded to 1st Place
  • $100 awarded to 2nd Place 
  • $50 awarded to 3rd Place

More fine print: To qualify, a player must win clear-first in any of the previous legs of the Grand Prix. For example: The 5 different Grand Prix winners + the next highest qualifying player based on cumulative points will participate. If a particular leg of the Grand Prix concludes with shared first place then no automatic qualification is awarded and a second total points qualifier will be invited. Similarly, if an individual player collects two (2) separate clear-first place results then the second total points qualifier again will be invited.

Hi Kaden, I updated this blog announcement.

Registration from 9-9:45am with Round 1 starting at 10am sharp.

We will be playing in Place Riel, lower level at the University of Saskatchewan
